Community Work

Community  Work

It's sad to point out that whenever you search the word Pokomo you see the horrifying pictures of the
clashes between Orma and Pokomo.
l can only comment that the community has changed a lot from the times they would run away to
choosing to fight back when attacked.
Its my prayer that peace may prevail and that the Pokomo may live in harmony with his neighbours
as before because together there are many things they can share and benefit one another.

The Pokomo in general are very peaceful people and are very communal, they like living together
and helping one another whenever their was need.
As most people could not afford to pay labourers they  would count on the help of the  neighbour  or
other villagers.
Together they have built  primary schools, churches, secondary schools, and. even hospitals  which we
 see in most Villages today.

I still remember how both Men and Women would come together helping  one another from one farm to another.
Following the Community principle called SINDIKA ( a name used for this season) which means
PUSH or HELP   they all worked together for the common good at essential times of
agriculture and times of harvest.
During any of these seasons the  Farmer only needed to call the young men,men and women they
would come to help. The farm  Owners  did not need to pay anything in exchange they only offered
the workers Tea,bread, and cooked rice and fish for Supper.
I still remember the excitement of the people during this time I could hear them saying today's SINDIKA is at so and sos farm and on and on and depending on the harvest it would be days of hard work.

The same system provided a Communal help in the event  of death, marriage, Circumcision individual personal personal problems, and in general this community work was an obligation, for if  you did not collaborate you will find yourself without help in the future.
However  it's sad to comment that  this practise is no longer there these days as most people prefer to be given money, alcohol.
